A night at the ballet

Last Wednesday I was treated by my Mum to a night at the ballet. Both my daughter and I are lucky enough to be regularly taken to the ballet by my Mum and have seen  performances at the Coliseum and the Royal Opera House in London. For that evening we had tickets for the Royal Ballet's "Sylvia" at the Royal Opera House.

London at this time of year is buzzing and as I came out of Covent Garden Tube Station I was greeted by not only crowds of people but also shining shop fronts with glittering Christmas displays.

These wonderful very expensive shoes caught my eye, well we can dream can't we?!

This window display also caught my eye.

It is only a short walk to the ROH from the tube past the Plaza which again shone out in the darkness, although some of these photos are blurry I actually quite like them....they have feeling of movement to them.
The ROH is a beautiful building and I met my Mum just inside by the shops. We then walked up through the building to our seats up in the "gods" in the upper amphitheater. The seats here have a great view but do not cost hundreds of pounds!

The story of Sylvia is simply "boy loves girl, girl captured by bad man, girl restored to boy by god!"

It is taken from a Greek myth showing the trials of love. This ballet was originally shown in the 19th century with music by Delibes' but it was not until 1952 when Frederick Ashton choreographed it for Magot Fonteyn that it became popular. We thoroughly enjoyed our night at the ballet and the buzzing atmosphere of London on a busy, cold  November night. I really felt that this was the beginning of my Christmas festivities!

Bye for now,

Jane x

(PS don't forget to read my **days til Christmas posts, my countdown to Christmas ...the 3rd post  is coming up after the weekend  this week. 1. What a lovely evening for you at the opera. Your photos of Covent Garden are so different to the ones we took just under 3 months ago! I remember sitting in there in the sun! Where does time go, I seem to spend most of my time saying that these days!!
Anyhow Jane you have a wonderful time in beautiful York and we'll see you next week. :)

  5. fabulous as always, I look forward to reading your blog, it always makes me smile and reminds me of my time living 'down south!'. I haven't been to the ballet for years - except Charley's ballet classes from aged 6-13 and various shows - I love plays, ballets and opera's so much more than the telly, sadly I am alone in my love of it in our house ..... have a fabby time in York, look forward to that blog too, been years since i went there as well!! 8. Hi Laney, I'm so glad I can give you some memories of living down South. We are lucky enough to live within a 40 minute journey up to London. I just love the city but would not actually want to live there so I guess I have the best of both worlds.

  9. Jane, I had to return to reply to your comment @ mushroomtender, re: Hot Wheel tracks. Our racetracks began elevated, from the couch, over the coffee table and onto the living room floor. The momentum ensured that the cars completed the loop, sometimes even launched off track. With all the activity and noise coming from five kids, my mom also found ways to improvise, thus the spankings with the loose tracks!
    Btw, I don't condone violence! ;o)

  11. Hi again Michele,
So now I know the secret of how to keep the cars in the hot wheels loop-LOL!! I loved you post and also I don't condone violence but my occasional smacks from my Mum and Dad certainly did me no harm at all!!
