My new pen and brush art pot

Hello everyone it's time for my fortnightly blogged design team post for Visible Image. Today I am showcasing their fab new MDF Cube divided pot . You may have spotted my sample shown below on their recent 20th anniversary shows on Hobbymaker TV

As you know I love making my art tins in my studio to store all my pens, brushes etc in. I have made many designs over the years. Here is a link to one I blogged from 4 years ago.  Mark Alexander (Mr Visible Image) messaged me a few months ago and told me that he was designing some new MDF products and had an idea to make a square MDF version inspired by my tins. I was delighted to hear this and we discussed heights etc. This finished pot he designed is gorgeous and the divided element mean it holds lots plus you can segregate things within it. I can't wait to get my sample back after the TV shows and use it in my studio.

This is how I decorated the 4 sides of mine, using 4 of the 18 fantastic new 4" stencils.

For my makes I used  Eye contact mini  New day Think happy thoughts and Inky Daisy

So onto my tutorial for today.

I first assembled the box, adding collage medium to the raw ends to make sure it stays securely together.

I then gessoed the sides to seal the MDF. Once dry I applied 2 coats of white acrylic paint. Working on 1 side at a time I taped a stencil in place and used black texture paste through each stencil.

When dry I turned the box and repeated this process using the other 3 stencils. (Of course you can cut and use card to decorate and stick this onto the cube sides. Personally I don't think it would be quite as robust as decorating straight onto the MDF. Plus I think it looks a little more "artsy" decorating this "direct" way)

When fully dry I added gold pen detailing to the eye. I also added gold pen to the centre of the daisy.

I then rubbed on some Treasure gold gilding paste to all the edges and buffed it up to give a lovely metallic sheen.

I purposely chose not to paint the inside of my pot as I liked the natural effect with my design. Of course  you could do this. Just make sure you paint it after assembling.

So here it is finished

And here it is again with of my crafting tools inside.

The designs you can create on the new cube divided pot are endless. The new 4"stencils also make it so quick and easy to make something that looks great. You could use your pot on your own craft desk. Or it could be used for storing kitchen tools or anything else around the house. It is also something you could decorate and give as a totally unique gift to a fellow crafter.

More buttons and lace for Country View Crafts

Hello everyone, it's time for my second blogged design team make for our August Country View Crafts challenge hosted over on Facebook. You don't need a blog or an Instagram account, just head over to the group and join in with the fun! The link is Here  and if you are not already a member just request to join and we will warmly welcome you. It is also be a place you can be the first to hear about workshops, the latest releases etc etc. We have a happy membership of over 340 crafters and we are growing every day. You can enter the challenges up to 5 times as you like as long as you use products or brands which are stocked on the Country View Website.

The theme for this month is "use buttons and lace on your make". For my first make I shared here on 3rd August I used a little artistic licence and used some "faux" lace with my buttons on my first make. For this make I used real vintage lace with my buttons as I made this card for my daughter and son in law's recent 12th wedding anniversary.

This is how I made it; I stamped and die cut my Tim Holtz cats and coloured them with distress pencils.

I used a background I had made at an art class recently with some lovely foiling on it.

I chose a piece of vintage lace from my stash and some buttons. I stamped the Visible Image Happy Anniversary sentiment and made a little banner and scene.

Here is my finished card again

with a close up

and 1 final shot.

I really hope I might have inspired you to join in and and have a play.
The amazing prize this month is the gorgeous brand new Tim Holtz Floristry stamp set...wow..such a brilliant prize.
Our challenges are open worldwide. You still have nearly 2 weeks to add your entries.

Remember you can find me most days over on Instagram Here @jane.tyrrell where I share many, many more makes then I have the time to blog.

Bye for now,

New products from Visible Image to celebrate their 20th anniversary

Hello everyone it's time for my fortnightly blogged design team post for Visible Image. There are some VERY exciting new products just released to celebrate 20 years of Visible Image. This includes 3 MDF shapes and eighteen 4"mini stencils plus paints, stamping blocks and lots more.

These are the new mini stencils

In the new MDF range there is a pen/brush pot, a tray and a cube. All are beautifully made here in the UK. The new small stencils were sized to decorate the box and cube but they also are wonderful for card making and any mixed media work, as you will have seen in the design team projects we have been sharing on social media.

The make I have decided to share a tutorial for today uses the new MDF tray

and the new mini Inky Art word stencil The tray is very simple to put together. I just add some collage medium to the raw edges (you could use any suitable glue) to hold it tightly together. When I first saw the tray I thought it would be perfect for storing paints and other media in my studio so my decoration was inspired by those thoughts. Even when dripped on this tray decoration will never look "spoilt!"

So after putting my tray together and gluing it I painted the visible surfaces with a coat of gesso to seal it. I then gave it  2 coats of white acrylic paint.

Next I painted the sides yellow.

I added some splashes of acrylic paint in yellow, blue, red and green to the inside. I watered the paint down a little and blew it around with a camera dusting blower. I purposely let it splash up the sides and left some white space in the centre for the stencil.

I then used the Ink splats stamp set

and archival ink. Perfect to resemble the inevitable paint and ink rings which will be left when using the tray!

I also added some of the stamping around the edges.

I stuck the new 4" Inky Art word stencil in place (top middle) in the centre with some masking tape

and added dark grey paint through the stencil. Always remember to wash your stencils immediately afterwards when using paint.

When dry I replaced the stencil and added some white pen detailing .

Finally, using the 4 larger flowers from the

Flower power stamp set

I repeat stamped them using archival ink around the outside of the tray.

Here is my finished tray again.

with some close ups

and 1 final shot showing my tray all stacked up and ready to use!

These new MDF products are a dream to decorate and I am looking forward to getting my art tray back after the TV shows to use in my studio. Obviously you could use the trays for anything; putting you keys in, keeping spice jars tidy in the kitchen etc, the list is endless. They would also make delightful personal gifts for your friends and family.

As part of the 20th anniversary celebrations a brilliant limited edition cat set was also released on Monday's Hobbymaker TV shows called Purr-fect birthday.

These are the 2 samples I made with it.

Billy in the box

and Billy on the fence

If there are any left don't delay grabbing one as they are a "one and done" and won't be re made. When they are gone, they're gone.

Both of these cards below were the some of the first DT makes I made for them and you an see that I used them as inspiration for my latest cat cards.

and the original Billy on the fence.
Fond memories.

I would like to close by thanking Mark and Helen aka Mr and Mrs Visible Image, for all their support over the years. I have bought Mark's stamps since he first made them himself and sold on Ebay 20 years ago. I also met Helen when she joined him and eventually became co director of Visible Image. I have been on their design team, first as a guest designer in 2016 and they then invited me back to join the team as a full design team member in 2017. Over the last 7 years I have made them hundreds of new release samples and design team makes using their wonderful products.  I have loved my time on the team and I'm proud to be their longest serving DT member.  Happy 20th anniversary Visible Image. Times have changed, as you are now part of the Gemporia/ Hobbymaker group, but here's to many more happy and creative years ahead.
